Glossary

  • Call number of evidence: if evidence is in a specific library or archive.
  • Copy: an individual exemplar of an imprint; can be an extant copy or a presumed copy.
  • Date of Footprint: if the footprint can be located at a moment in time: exact date, exact year (1557/58 e.g. for a Hebrew year if the season is not known); range of dates (1624-1655 e.g. if we know that the owner was collecting books in a particular place in that span of years); approximate year ( 1655 c.; note: place “c” after); if we have date of owner’s death, “ <1655 ” e.g.; if in doubt place question mark after 1655?
  • Evidence: evidence supporting a footprint .
  • Evidence Location: where can one find the evidence now: a particular library, archive, a printed book, a journal article etc.
  • Evidence Type: could include an extant copy with an owner’s signature, a library mark, etc.; a booklist/catalog/inventory; a reference to a book coming into someone’s possession in a paratext to another work, a letter, and so forth.
  • Footprint: evidence of a book (imprint) at a moment in time (or across a span of time) and at a point in space AFTER the creation of the book.
  • Imprint: an edition of a particular work.
  • Owner: owner or possessor of the copy or presumed copy at the time of the footprint (see also Actor Roles). Note: We do not claim to attribute legal rights of ownership of these materials; we are simply describing who holds possession of the books at a particular time.
  • Place(s) of Footprint: where does the evidence tell us the book was.
  • Title in footprint: this refers to the title of the book or the literary work as it appears in the imprint or that the footprint has traced a copy of.
